I'm delighted to have been selected by the bods from English Heritage to blog for the Crewe event, with a handful of others from across the country. I was delighted to speak to Winsford Ladies Midweek Club on Wednesday evening this week, speaking on the topic of The Ghosts of Crewe and Nantwich. Taking place in the beautiful Over United Reformed Church, the club is part of The National Association of Womens' Clubs.

Covering a variety of different hauntings past and present in the area, the ladies listened with interest, giving occasional friendly heckling. Recounting one haunting where a woman had been 'touched all over by cold, icy hands', much laughter greeted the retort "ooh I've been there".

As the speaker, I can certainly say I enjoyed the evening and left feeling I'd gained 34 new friends.

A brand new Ghost Tour arrives in Crewe in January.

In association with Virgin Trains "Strange at Crewe - The Crewe Station Ghost Tour" will highlight some spooky experiences in and around the famous railway junction station. Besides contemporary experiences, the tour will bring to light a little known horror story by a famous author set on Crewe Station around the 1920s.

The tour is being put together by Tim Prevett who has run the ghost walks in Crewe and Nantwich town centres since 2007. "Getting the opportunity to trial a Ghost Tour at the iconic Crewe Station is something I've wanted to do since the early days of doing the town centre tour."

"I am determined to promote Crewe and its heritage to a wider audience. This tour will do just that. I am very grateful to Crewe Station Manager, Sam Dixon and Virgin Trains for this opportunity. 2011 will see me do much more to engage people with our town's history and what remains of its built heritage."

"All content is brand new", stresses Tim, "covering a phantom cat, inexplicable child footprints, a condensed telling of the short ghost story 'Crewe', among other strangeness in the locale. I am delighted the tour will give access to one of the tunnels beneath the station and all with some interpretation of the station and its historic environment. You will never see the station in the same light!"

There are tours at 7pm and 8:30pm on Saturday 22nd January. Some proceeds of the tours will be donated to Virgin Trains' nominated charity, CLIC Sargent, for helping children with cancer.

Some of the customers who were on the Chester Ghost Walk which I covered in August have friends back home in Australia who don't quite believe that there was a coffin in the wall... well as this quick clip of mine demonstrates - there is... I can't get the bats among those ruins which added the proverbial icing to the cake that evening, but hope this communicates the spirit of the area between St John's ruins and Grosvenor Park.

Jerome, Arizona meets Chester, Cheshire

It's marvellous how tenuous distant links sometimes become conjoined in the most unlikely of settings.

In August 2009 I took one of the Haunted Tours of Jerome in Arizona, which was several hours of hearing the haunted history of a Victorian Mining Town way out in the desert and exploring up and down the side of Cleopatra Hill. As Americans may say, it was totally awesome and lots of fun.

With Arizona adjoining Mexico, the culture of The Day of the Dead readily permeates across the border. During the Haunted Tour, I photographed these Mexican figurines in a store window... cute little things, eh?

Turn the clock forward to October 2010, and I discuss The Day of the Dead with a Lush store manager who has been on the Ghost Walks of Crewe and Nantwich... I then forget about that discussion until the end of the month.

The day after celebrating 12 years of Roman Tours for whom I have done work over the last 6 years or so, I approach the higher level of Chester Amphitheatre to see some delightfully gothically dressed folks dancing around in costumers and banners... it turns out to be a group from the Lush shop in Chester celebrating The Day of the Dead!

Suddenly there's a connection in my brain between places about 6,000 miles distant. Good memories of Jerome, and the fun, friendly staff of Lush celebrating a very meaningful part of what has become Halloween celebration.

I mentioned this picture to those on the Chester Ghost Tour in August, on the same day as Chester Races.

While I assisted on the Chester Halloween Tours several years ago, being the spirit of Billy Hobby rattling the gates on Grosvenor Park and also the ghost of possibly King Harold, I had a camera to hand (as always).

Between groups coming along, I would pass the time taking atmospheric shots for the sake of it, and to prevent myself getting spooked in an otherwise creepy location.

This picture shows a fuzzy ball of light a few steps up; this was not taken with a flash, so it is not the bog standard 'orb'; most likely it is lens flare, but the setting and the night concerned make it one to wish it could be something a little more other worldly...

August is now full due to bookings and other arrangements. Walks and events for the Autumn and Halloween period are under development, recommencing Thursday 23rd September.

If you have a group of 8 people or more, I can schedule a mutually convenient ghost walk at the standard prices (£7 adult, £5 concessions); if you have less than 8 people, I can do a Ghost Walk for the minimum of £70.*

Ghost Walks of Crewe and Nantwich operator Tim Prevett is underway with his second book, "Paranormal Crewe and Nantwich" to be published by Amberley Books later in 2010. His first book "Roads and Trackways of North Wales" was published in 2008.

Tim enthuses, "Since starting the Ghost Walks in October 2007 I have become the grateful custodian of a large amount of paranormal experience accounts from the Crewe and Nantwich area. Besides those already in the public domain, I am keen to suitably present these encounters to a wider audience."

People who have offered their tales during walks as well as newspaper readers, radio listeners and internet users are asked to get in touch for their accounts to be considered.

"I am after three types of contact", continues Tim. "Firstly, those who informed me of their experiences during a walk but with being on the move I was unable to record or note the details. Secondly, those who have not been in touch with me before, but are sitting quietly
with their own encounters. Credit or anonymity can be given as desired with any material included!"

"Thirdly, there are well known hauntings, or ones I have known about but am unable to get in touch with those who told me. I would love more information on those leads. The Lyceum is obviously Crewe's best known haunted location with tales recorded in Stewart Green's book. I
want to bring more tales to the fore than what is already known.".

"Publicly known Ghost stories from the historic train station are notably absent; and what is it that's so sinister about the eighth floor of Rail House? I am also keen to get in touch with folk who used to work at The Three Cooks on Earle Street before it closed."

"In Nantwich, experiences have been hinted at from the likes of The Barony Hospital and (currently closed) Cheshire Cheese. The once former pub "The Lamb Hotel" (Chatterton House) was rumoured to be haunted, as well as a particularly chilling tale from a flat above a
shop in Hospital Street was related to me. All fresh angles on these and others leads is welcome.

A do not miss event in the calendar of Nantwich is Holly Holy Day - commemoration of The Battle of Nantwich in 1644. Civil War reenactors descend on the town en masse - with a procession Malbank School along Welsh Row to the churchyard, and then a mock battle on Mill Island. Official website HERE.

Please bring digital cameras and use them - you never know what you may pick up!

Small torches are useful for dark alleyways and vigils.

Private tours by arrangement year round with details agreed by mutual consent. (Women's Institutes, social groups, (sober!) Hen and Stag Parties too).

Company groups for Christmas parties, team building exercises are welcome for a ghost walk and /or a paranormal vigil at Crewe Heritage Centre, by arrangement

Please meet at the respective starting point 10-15 mins beforehand. Walks will proceed whatever the weather, so come appropriately dressed.

Children are now welcome on the tours due to not finishing on licensed premises. If they can cope with Harry Potter, they will be fine with the tour!

Unless otherwise noted or arranged, the Crewe Walk will start from the War Memorial opposite Municipal Buildings and finish at The Crewe Heritage Centre next to Tesco.

The Nantwich Walk starts outside The Railway Hotel and will finish close to the town centre.

The regular Friday / Saturday tours are £7 adult £5 concession £20 family (up to 3 under 16s)

A face in the dark?

Please note visiting pub cellars is not now available to allow under 18s to come on the walks.

On the Crewe Ghost Walk we get to visit this cellar (much bigger than this shot suggests), courtesy of The Three Lamps (as of August 2008, "Oscars").

Last weekend this image was taken on a mobile phone by friends of the manager. Looking carefully you can see the outline of what appears to be a face just centre right. Once you adjust to the image, there is more that becomes visible, arguably.

How are the tours for access and the Disability Discrimination Act 2005?
The route of the tours are planned to be as accessible as possible, with kerbstones being the principal potential obstruction.

The upstairs of the North Signal Box at Crewe Heritage Centre has no wheelchair access.

Please note visiting pub cellars is not now available on general tours to allow under 18s to come on the walks. As and when access to licensed premises is arranged the relevant following paragraphs apply.

Visiting the pubs' cellars is a goodwill arrangement with the landlords, and are otherwise off limits to non-staff, there is no wheelchair access to those areas. Access is via steep stairs with a hand rail in each location.

Are the routes risk assessed?
Yes it is. Crossing roads, kerbs, paving slabs, slight inclines and declines are the main hazards to be aware of. Common sense is the key. A reminder of any particular hazards will be given at the start of the tour, or as needed during the tour. Most tours will happen during low or poor light, so bear this in mind; you are welcome to bring a torch.

In the pub cellars there are tripping hazards, and potential head hitting with low ceilings in places.

By their very nature cellars are enclosed spaces, often with spiders, so if claustrophobia or arachnaphobia are issues for you, please do not put yourself in a stressful situation. You are welcome to be spooked upstairs and enjoy the pub's welcome while some get spooked downstairs.

If you have a health condition which you feel other people should know of for your well being, either inform myself (in confidence) beforehand, or ensure someone whom you are with knows.

Where can I park?

See the Cheshire East council website HERE for details of car park locations, prices and conditions. Both towns, more immediately Crewe, do have changes happening to some car parks - so conditions on the ground may differ from their appearance online. Not shown on the map of Crewe is the Tesco car park and Crewe Heritage Centre car park which are off to the bottom right of Vernon Way.

It is up to you to check the charges, if applicable. Where you park is at your own risk and own choice.
Can I get there by public transport?

For Crewe - The Train Station is a 15 to 20 minute walk south east from the town centre. It is served by regular bus services to the town centre, and by taxis. The Bus Station is a 5 minute walk to the west of the War Memorial. www.arrivabus.co.uk, is the main bus operator, with First Bus route number 20 coming in from Stoke on Trent to Leighton Hospital, and D&G Buses providing further routes.
For Nantwich - Nantwich Train Station is a 5 to 10 minute walk away from the starting place, with services from Crewe and Shrewsbury. The Bus Station is immediately next to the starting point outside the Civic Hall and Nantwich Tourist Information. Excepting the service from Stoke, the bus operators are the same as Crewe.

Taxis operate across Crewe and Nantwich- consult the telephone directory service of your choice.

Paranormal Pub Tour - Nantwich Food and Drink Festival

The Paranormal Pub Tours which have been part of "The Fringe" events of the Nantwich Food and Drink Fesitval have passed off successfully. Fifty punters took part in four sell out tours, while numbers of people passing in the streets clearly knew what was happening with spooky whistling of The X-Files theme tune or mock-ghost sounds (by the way, why is it that ghosts are meant to go "woooo-ooooooo" in a deep vibrato voice?) .

The focus on haunted hostelries, strange things associated with food and even a cook with attitude in Nantwich worked well. Even a little bit of genuine paranormal pub phenomena happened it seems. Usually the most spooky thing which happens in the cellar is getting cobwebs in the hair, but the first group on Friday night had some encounters.

A couple people were convinced that during the five minute vigil / lights off they could see darker areas in the dark which moved (not being assured that it was group members shifting from foot to foot). Another woman felt something cold next to her and believed her hair to have been gently pulled by unseen hands - and every one was completely poker-faced in denial once the lights went back on. Honest guv!

Talking with half of the group afterwards we all nodded with communal agreement that 'something was building up'. That four letter word "Time" dictated that the short vigil end, so had anything begun happen, it was truncated by necessity.

The irony of having Jamie Oliver write concerning the Pub Tour which features food and drink brings a smile too. Though it is not a pub crawl by any means... poor lighting, steep steps, low entrances and ceilings with uneven surfaces do not mix with excessive alcohol even on an historic tour of haunted heritage and creepy cuisine.

The formula worked well; with a little revision and adding to, The Paranormal Pub Tour should be back next year for the Food and Drink Festival in 2009.

The last weekend of September sees Crewe and Nantwich Ghost walks run tours to join in with the theme of food and drink over the weekend of the Food and Drink Festival.

It seems that pubs always have a disproportionate amount of paranormal activity going on, and Nantwich is no exception; so, a tour of the Weird Side of Nantwich with a focus on Haunted Hostelries seems a natural choice to run with the festival's theme.
